Ips and Black Turpentine Beetles: Nashville’s Other Pine Killers
Nashville homeowners with pines have probably heard of the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis). It’s the one that makes headlines
Most trees require periodic pruning to eliminate hazardous branches, prevent site use conflicts, and simply keep them looking their best. AKA Tree Service provides a range of professional trimming and pruning services to help your trees thrive and reach their full potential.
You probably understand that your trees require periodic pruning, but knowing when, where, and how much to prune isn’t always easy — and neither is finding someone you can trust to prune them properly, without harming your trees or putting your property at risk.
Homeowners and property managers often struggle with things like:
You deserve expert guidance about the kind of pruning your trees actually need, as well as a team that can perform the work safely and according to accepted arboricultural practices.
To keep your property safe, beautiful, and accessible, you need more than a guy with a truck and a chainsaw. You need a trained team that understands the risks trees can present, follows safe work practices, and treats your property with care.
That’s exactly what you get when you rely on the experts at AKA Tree Service.
We follow ANSI A300 standards and provide expert guidance and tree care.
We prioritize safe work practices that protect people and property.
We use modern, professional equipment to complete tree work safely and efficiently.
We complete every project using AKA team members — never subcontractors.
We carry the insurance coverage needed to give you complete peace of mind.
We respond quickly whenever storms or unexpected tree problems occur.

I’ve been using AKA Tree Service for many years. They continue to provide consistent high-quality service for very large jobs. They have removed hundred foot plus Trees from around sheds, fences and Pole Barnes. I recently paid them their whole day rate, since I had so many trees. They were here From 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. They cut down 12 trees, one of them 130 feet tall and did an excellent job cleaning everything up.Posted on Google![]()

For years, I relied on the same local tree service when I needed a tree removed, that is, until recently, when their estimate seemed unusually exorbitant. A friend recommended AKA Tree Service and I could not have been more fortunate. From the moment I first met Chandler for an on-site estimate, they provided nothing but fantastic service. Chandler is friendly, polite, thorough and knowledgeable. Without asking, he provided me with all of their insurance and licensing information, explained their approach for the job, worked with me on minute details and schedules and kept me apprised as we worked toward completion of the job. Their ops manager Joy then provided a follow up visit to ensure the proper equipment was planned to be on site as needed. Finally, Vladimir, Pablo and René came out for the actual removal and removed 3 huge white pine trees (and I mean HUGE!) piece by piece, limb by limb. By the time they had finished, you could not even tell they were here! The job site was immaculate, they hauled off every single twig and left my property in amazing shape, disturbing hardly anything along the way. On top of all this, they were about the nicest crew I have ever had the pleasure of working with. With all this said, I could not recommend AKA Tree Service any higher. Simply the best and I wish them well as they grow their business into my neck of the woods.Posted on Google![]()

AKA tree Service is a great company with which to work. They have a very knowledgeable certified arborist on staff (shout out to Chandler!) who gave us much peace of mind of the work needed and stayed in touch with us throughout the job. The crews came on time, worked hard, were polite and professional, did exactly what we had contracted to have done, did not tear up our yard, and cleaned the whole area before leaving. We are very pleased with the exceptional job done by AKA Tree Service.Posted on Google![]()

AKA TREE SERVICE-The crew of 3 experienced men did a wonderful job in helping us with major pruning and the removal of several substantial bushes which had grown beyond my reach. Their equipment was first rate as evidenced by some of the work requiring the use of a lift to reach growth that was close to 20 feet high. They cleared up all of the debris, ran their chipper and as I requested dumped the full load of chips exactly where I needed. They were safety conscious and worked with clear focus on the specific areas. I highly recommend their services.Posted on Google![]()

I've used these folks a few time. They are quick, reasonably priced, always clean up afterwards. Recently I had them take down some big pines (over 31/2' across) that were between my home and my neighbors. They brought everything down with minimal disturbance to the heavy surrounding tree canopy. Great job. I worked with Scott Overstreet. Good guy. Oversaw the project and kept things rolling even though we had a lot of rain.Posted on Yelp![]()

Finding a tree-service company that responds in a timely manner and then actually does the work proved to be more challenging than we expected. The AKA Tree Service crew proved that it can be done! Taylor is the sales person we dealt with, and he was professional from the get-go. With the winter weather we've been having, getting the crew scheduled to come out took a little doing, but they were still out within a week of booking the service. They arrived early, finished the work, and left our yard in great condition. We would use AKA Tree Service again.Posted on Yelp![]()

Anyone with a chainsaw or pair of loppers can cut branches off a tree. But ISA-certified arborists are trained to know which branches to prune, where to place the cuts, and which branches to leave in place.

Enjoy peace of mind knowing your property is in expert hands.
Neither pruning nor trimming is a one-size-fits-all task. They must be employed carefully and deliberately to ensure the best outcome for the tree and to meet your specific goals. To accomplish that, the AKA Tree Service team will use a variety of trimming and pruning techniques.
You don’t have to know which technique is appropriate for your trees — that’s our job. But we’ll explain the basics of each below, so you’ll have a better idea of what to expect.
Typically carried out when a tree is young, structural pruning seeks to establish good form and proactively address problematic branch unions. The result is a tree that’s better prepared to remain safe and reach its full potential.
Crown cleaning involves the selective removal of dead, damaged, decayed, or diseased branches within the canopy, and it may also entail the pruning of branches with poor structure to help keep the tree safe. This kind of pruning can be performed periodically as dead or problematic branches develop.
Crown reduction involves reducing the height or spread of a tree’s canopy while maintaining its natural form. It may be appropriate when branches have outgrown the available space or when reducing mechanical stress on specific limbs.
When a tree’s lower branches or canopy block important sightlines or limit access beneath a tree, arborists can often remove some of the bottom limbs without causing undue harm. This has the effect of “raising” the canopy, hence the name of the technique.
Crown thinning involves selectively removing branches to reduce canopy density while maintaining the tree’s overall size and shape. When appropriate, thinning can improve light penetration and air movement through the canopy and reduce the weight of selected branches.
Clearance trimming is helpful when trees or shrubs have outgrown the space available and started blocking access or sightlines. By trimming the branches back away from these areas, the shrubs or trees can be retained, while eliminating most site-use conflicts.
It’s always a good idea to be proactive about tree pruning. Many tree health issues, structural problems, and hazardous conditions are easy to address when caught early, but the more time that passes, the fewer mitigation options you’ll end up having.
The problem is that homeowners and property managers are often unaware of the signs that indicate a tree would benefit from trimming or pruning. So, be sure to contact an ISA-certified arborist if you notice:
Additionally, it is often a good idea to have trees evaluated and pruned if appropriate on a periodic basis, generally about once every three to five years.
Tree trimming and pruning costs usually fall between $600 to $2,500, though they may exceed this range in some cases. The exact costs associated with any trimming or pruning job will vary based on a number of factors, including:
Of course, it’s easy to find out exactly how much it’ll cost to have a tree trimmed or pruned: Simply contact the AKA Tree Service team and request a free onsite estimate.

It’s natural to have questions about tree trimming and pruning services. We’ll share answers to some of the most common ones our clients have below, so you can understand these services better.
How often should a tree be pruned?
Different trees have different pruning needs, and the best cadence should be determined by consulting with an ISA-certified arborist. However, having established landscape trees evaluated every three to five years — and pruned when warranted — is a reasonable general guideline.
Pruning generally refers to the selective removal of branches to accomplish specific goals, such as removing deadwood, improving tree structure, or providing clearance around a home. Trimming is a less precise term that’s often used to describe cutting back branches for clearance or appearance.
However, homeowners and property managers often use the two terms interchangeably.
Proper pruning can benefit trees in several ways. It can remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches, address certain structural problems, and reduce conflicts with buildings and other surroundings.
However, unnecessary or excessive pruning can actually harm trees, which is why it’s important to prune with a specific objective in mind.
Topping removes large portions of a tree’s crown, often leaving behind branch stubs and large wounds. This can cause significant stress, promote the development of weakly attached sprouts, increase the potential for decay, and permanently damage the tree’s natural form.
When a tree’s size needs to be managed, proper reduction pruning (crown reduction) is generally a much better approach.
The best time to prune depends on the tree species and the reason for pruning.
For many trees, late winter or early spring is an ideal time for routine pruning, but some species should be pruned at other times. For example, pruning oaks during the warmer months may increase the risk of certain diseases, so routine oak pruning is generally best performed during the dormant season.
Nevertheless, dead, broken, or hazardous branches can generally be addressed whenever necessary.
Homeowners can often handle small branches that can be reached safely from the ground with hand pruners or other appropriate tools. However, pruning large branches or any work that requires climbing, chainsaws, or working near structures or utility lines is best left to trained professionals.
Tree pruning costs vary considerably depending on the size of the tree, the amount and type of pruning required, accessibility, equipment needs, and other site conditions. However, most pruning and trimming jobs will fall between $600 to $2,500.
Whether you have dead limbs hanging over your house, your kids need more clearance beneath a tree to play, or overgrown trees are blocking access to your commercial building, it’s important to partner with a tree care team that has the experience, training, and tools to get the job done right.
Contact the AKA Tree Service team now to schedule your free estimate and cut with confidence.
