A Guide to Mulching Around Trees and Shrubs

To most people, trees and shrubs may appear to be simple parts of everyday life. However, at AKA Tree Service, we understand that they are far more than that—they are essential, living parts of our ecosystem that many owners devote many hours and resources to. Providing nutrient-rich mulch to your trees and shrubs is a crucial step in ensuring their roots receive the support they need to grow strong.

Trees and shrubs can be difficult to maintain alone, especially when faced with unexpected issues like drought, pests, or disease. Compacted or exposed soil around trees can restrict roots from accessing the necessary oxygen and nutrients. While routine watering or chemical treatments may provide short-term relief, they often fail to address the long-term health of your plants.

Serving both Georgia and Tennessee, our team of tree care specialists is highly knowledgeable about the specific needs of local trees and shrubs. By combining our expertise with top-quality organic mulch, we create the ideal conditions for your plants to thrive, enhancing the overall beauty and durability of your landscape.

7 Steps to Successfully Install Mulch

Mulching may seem simple, but to get the best results, it’s important to use the right technique and pay close attention to detail. Here’s how to do it correctly:

  1. Prepare the area: Clear away any weeds, grass, or debris around the base of your tree or shrub. This removes competition for nutrients and gives the plants a clean, healthy foundation to grow.
  2. Inspect the roots: Check the root collar, which is the area where the trunk expands at the base. If you notice roots growing upwards, carefully trim them. Make sure the root collar remains uncovered and free from soil or mulch.
  3. Choose the right mulch: Pick a mulch that suits your landscape and supports the specific needs of your plants. Popular options include wood chips, shredded bark, and even unique materials like cocoa shells.
  4. Apply the mulch: Spread a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around the base in a “donut” shape. Keep the layer thinner near the trunk and make it thicker as you move outwards. For trees, try to extend the mulch to the drip line; for shrubs, spread it just beyond the outer edges.
  5. Leave space around the trunk: Keep a 2-3 inch gap between the mulch and the trunk. This prevents excess moisture from building up, which could lead to bark rot, and allows air to circulate properly.
  6. Water thoroughly: After applying the mulch, give the area a thorough watering. This will help the mulch settle into place and ensure the roots get immediate hydration.
  7. Monitor and refresh: Regularly check the mulch to make sure it stays at the right depth and continues to hold moisture. Replenish as needed to maintain its protective and nourishing benefits.

8 Ways Mulch Benefits Your Plants

Mulching is far more than just a final detail to your yard’s appearance—it’s a crucial practice for supporting the health of your trees and shrubs. Here are some of the key advantages:

  1. Retains moisture: Mulch acts as a barrier that slows down water evaporation, helping the soil stay moist. This is especially helpful during hot weather, reducing the need for frequent watering and potentially saving on water usage.
  2. Regulates temperature: By insulating the soil, mulch helps keep it cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter, protecting delicate roots from extreme temperature shifts.
  3. Suppresses weeds: Mulch blocks sunlight, preventing weeds from growing and reducing competition for vital nutrients and water.
  4. Improves soil quality: As organic mulch breaks down, it enriches the soil with nutrients and improves its structure, boosting fertility over time.
  5. Prevents erosion: Mulch helps control water runoff and absorbs the impact of rainfall, reducing soil erosion and maintaining the integrity of your yard.
  6. Protects roots: A layer of mulch safeguards surface roots from damage caused by foot traffic or lawn equipment, keeping your plants safe.
  7. Enhances curb appeal: Mulch gives your garden a neat, well-maintained look, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your landscape.
  8. Reduces soil compaction: Mulch helps prevent soil from becoming compacted, allowing for better water infiltration and promoting healthier root growth.

Are Mulch and Wood Chips the Same Thing?

Mulch refers to a protective layer placed on top of the soil, but it’s not quite the same as wood chips. That said, both options offer similar benefits, such as retaining soil moisture, regulating temperature, and preventing weed growth.

Wood chips are made solely from shredded wood, while mulch is a mixture of different materials, including bark, leaves, and even non-organic options like rubber or stones. This combination allows mulch to provide additional advantages, such as better nutrient release and enhanced moisture retention, depending on the variety chosen.

Your decision ultimately comes down to personal preference and your landscaping goals. Some people love the rustic charm of wood chips, while others enjoy the variety of colors and textures that mulch offers. Either way, you’re making a smart investment in the long-term health and vitality of your trees and shrubs.

Is There a Correlation Between Mulching and Termite Infestations?

While it’s true that termites are attracted to moisture and wood, properly applied organic mulch poses little risk of increasing an infestation. Termites generally prefer decaying wood over fresh bark mulch or wood chips.

Don’t let worries about termites stop you from enjoying the many benefits of mulching! While inorganic options like rubber or rocks are available, they lack the soil-enriching qualities of organic mulch. Proper application is crucial—spreading mulch at the right depth and keeping it away from the base of trees, shrubs, and structures helps reduce the likelihood of termite issues.

I’ve been using AKA Tree Service for many years. They continue to provide consistent high-quality service for very large jobs. They have removed hundred foot plus Trees from around sheds, fences and Pole Barnes. I recently paid them their whole day rate, since I had so many trees. They were here From 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. They cut down 12 trees, one of them 130 feet tall and did an excellent job cleaning everything up.

For years, I relied on the same local tree service when I needed a tree removed, that is, until recently, when their estimate seemed unusually exorbitant. A friend recommended AKA Tree Service and I could not have been more fortunate. From the moment I first met Chandler for an on-site estimate, they provided nothing but fantastic service. Chandler is friendly, polite, thorough and knowledgeable. Without asking, he provided me with all of their insurance and licensing information, explained their approach for the job, worked with me on minute details and schedules and kept me apprised as we worked toward completion of the job. Their ops manager Joy then provided a follow up visit to ensure the proper equipment was planned to be on site as needed. Finally, Vladimir, Pablo and René came out for the actual removal and removed 3 huge white pine trees (and I mean HUGE!) piece by piece, limb by limb. By the time they had finished, you could not even tell they were here! The job site was immaculate, they hauled off every single twig and left my property in amazing shape, disturbing hardly anything along the way. On top of all this, they were about the nicest crew I have ever had the pleasure of working with. With all this said, I could not recommend AKA Tree Service any higher. Simply the best and I wish them well as they grow their business into my neck of the woods.

AKA tree Service is a great company with which to work. They have a very knowledgeable certified arborist on staff (shout out to Chandler!) who gave us much peace of mind of the work needed and stayed in touch with us throughout the job. The crews came on time, worked hard, were polite and professional, did exactly what we had contracted to have done, did not tear up our yard, and cleaned the whole area before leaving. We are very pleased with the exceptional job done by AKA Tree Service.

AKA TREE SERVICE-The crew of 3 experienced men did a wonderful job in helping us with major pruning and the removal of several substantial bushes which had grown beyond my reach. Their equipment was first rate as evidenced by some of the work requiring the use of a lift to reach growth that was close to 20 feet high. They cleared up all of the debris, ran their chipper and as I requested dumped the full load of chips exactly where I needed. They were safety conscious and worked with clear focus on the specific areas. I highly recommend their services.

Big shout out to the folks at Gwinnett Place Honda for getting me into the car of my dreams - was expecting a typical dealership but was surprised and pleased to find excellent attention and level of service. My initial contact came online so I was routed to Joseph Yim, who manages online sales, and he hooked me up with Juan DaLao, who was very attentive and knew that I knew what I wanted and nothing else will do . My new black edition pilot is perfect!

I've used these folks a few time. They are quick, reasonably priced, always clean up afterwards. Recently I had them take down some big pines (over 31/2' across) that were between my home and my neighbors. They brought everything down with minimal disturbance to the heavy surrounding tree canopy. Great job. I worked with Scott Overstreet. Good guy. Oversaw the project and kept things rolling even though we had a lot of rain.

Finding a tree-service company that responds in a timely manner and then actually does the work proved to be more challenging than we expected. The AKA Tree Service crew proved that it can be done! Taylor is the sales person we dealt with, and he was professional from the get-go. With the winter weather we've been having, getting the crew scheduled to come out took a little doing, but they were still out within a week of booking the service. They arrived early, finished the work, and left our yard in great condition. We would use AKA Tree Service again.
