Ips and Black Turpentine Beetles: Nashville’s Other Pine Killers
Nashville homeowners with pines have probably heard of the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis). It’s the one that makes headlines
It isn’t always easy to understand what’s going on with your trees or what you should do to keep them healthy, safe, and thriving. We’ll try to help by answering some of the most common questions our clients have, so that you can make the best decisions for your trees and property.
Below, we’ll answer some of the most common questions about trees, their maintenance, and knowing when to seek professional assistance.
Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to contact a professional tree care team anytime you need guidance about your trees or have concerns about their condition. Given the value trees provide and the potential risks they can present, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and get expert guidance.
With that said, there are a number of specific signs and symptoms that should prompt you to contact an arborist, including dead branches, thinning leaves, cracks, fungal growth, pest activity, and changes in your tree’s appearance.
As a rule of thumb, it’s generally wise to have your trees inspected at least once per year — especially when they’re growing near homes, buildings, walkways, or other high-traffic areas. It’s also a good idea to have them assessed following severe storms or noticeable changes in a tree’s condition.
Certified arborists have demonstrated knowledge and experience in proper tree care that surpasses that of an everyday tree care worker. Among other things, they’ve accumulated detailed knowledge about tree biology, pruning practices, risk assessment, pests, diseases, and tree health.
By working with an ISA-certified arborist, you can feel confident that your trees are in the hands of someone who understands how to provide appropriate recommendations based on professional standards and best practices.
In many cases, yes. Not every tree that’s suffered damage, contracted a disease, or experienced a pest attack needs to be removed. Depending on the tree’s condition, solutions like pruning, plant health care, structural support, or ongoing monitoring may help preserve the tree.
The best way to keep your trees healthy is by providing them with proactive care. Ensure that they’re pruned properly, inspected routinely, watered appropriately, and provided with good soil conditions. By taking these steps, you’ll help ensure the tree is well-prepared to cope with any threats that arise.
It’s not always easy for property owners to distinguish safe trees from hazardous ones. In fact, you’ll typically need the help of a tree-care professional to know whether or not your tree is at risk. Nevertheless, we’ll provide some information about some of the common warning signs trees exhibit below.
You’ll usually need a certified arborist to conduct a tree risk assessment to determine if it is hazardous. However, warning signs like large dead branches, cracks, cavities, significant decay, root problems, or sudden changes in the tree’s appearance may indicate a potential problem.
Not always. Many healthy trees naturally grow with a lean and remain stable for decades. However, a tree that starts leaning suddenly, continues to move, or causes changes in the surrounding soil should be evaluated immediately.
Cracks, cavities, and areas of decay do not always mean a tree needs to be removed, but they should be evaluated by a certified arborist. The severity of the issue depends on factors like the tree’s species, size, and structure, as well as its location and the extent of the damage.
Healthy? Yes. Structurally stable? Maybe not.
Many trees become hollow over time as the heartwood decays. They’re often able to remain healthy because the living portion of the tree is primarily restricted to the outer layers of the trunk. However, hollow areas can definitely reduce a tree’s structural strength in some cases.
So, you’ll want to have a professional assess any hollow tree located near your home, driveway, walkway, or other high-traffic area.
If you are concerned that a tree could fail, keep people and pets away from it and contact AKA Tree Service for an evaluation. This is especially important if you notice a change in its lean, nearby soil movement, broken limbs, trunk cracks, or damage after a storm.
Removing a tree is a big decision, and it’s natural to have questions before making the final call. Below, we’ll answer a few of the most common questions our clients have about when removal may be necessary, what the process involves, and what to expect.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to impossible for property owners to know whether a tree needs to be removed for certain. In most cases, you’ll need to consult with an ISA-certified arborist to understand the best course of action.
However, signs like an increasing lean, large branch failure, significant hollows, and fungal activity are some of the most common clues that removal may be needed.
Yes. Our experienced tree care professionals can safely remove trees growing near homes, businesses, fences, utilities, and other obstacles by using specialized techniques and equipment.
Depending on the situation, trees may be removed in sections using climbing techniques, aerial lifts, rigging systems, or even cranes to protect the surrounding area.
Sometimes. Proactive tree removal may be warranted when a tree has serious structural issues, declining health, or is located somewhere that creates unacceptable risk.
Removing a problematic tree before it fails can help prevent more serious damage. It also allows the work to be completed under safer, more controlled conditions.
The time required to remove a tree depends on its size, location, and condition. It may take less than an hour to remove a small, healthy tree growing in a wide-open location. Conversely, it may take half a day or longer to remove a large, structurally compromised tree growing over a home.
In all cases, our team will evaluate your tree and explain how long they expect the job to take.
After a tree is removed, the remaining stump can either be left in place, or we can grind the stump down several inches below grade. Many property owners choose stump grinding to improve the appearance of their landscape, reclaim usable space, and reduce potential pest issues.
Tree removal requirements vary depending on where you live. Some cities, neighborhoods, and HOAs have rules regarding tree removal, especially for large, protected, or significant trees.
Because our tree care team works regularly in your area, we can provide some guidance and help you navigate the permitting process when necessary.
Proper pruning helps maintain healthier, stronger, and more attractive trees. However, every cut affects the way a tree grows, which highlights the importance of working with a team of true professionals who will follow current industry best practices.
Here are answers to common questions about when, why, and how trees should be pruned.
The right pruning schedule depends on the tree species, age, condition, location, and your goals. Some trees benefit from more frequent structural pruning, while mature trees may only need occasional maintenance.
A professional tree evaluation can help determine the appropriate pruning schedule based on your tree’s specific needs.
The best time to prune depends on the type of tree and the reason for pruning. Many trees are commonly pruned during the dormant season, but dead, damaged, or hazardous branches can — and often should — be addressed as quickly as possible.
Absolutely. Improper pruning can damage branches, create structural problems, increase stress, and make trees more vulnerable to pests and disease. That’s why it’s important to work with trained professionals who understand proper pruning techniques and industry standards.
The terms are often used interchangeably, but pruning typically refers to selective cuts made to improve tree health, structure, or safety. Trimming is commonly used more broadly to describe cutting branches for clearance, appearance, or maintenance.
Not always. Branches growing over a home or structure do not automatically make a tree hazardous. However, dead, damaged, poorly attached, or overly extended limbs may create concerns that should be evaluated.
A professional tree care team can determine whether pruning is needed and recommend an approach that balances safety with the health of the tree.
Tree topping is the practice of cutting large branches or the top of a tree without regard for proper cut placement. This practice can severely damage trees, encourage weak regrowth, and create long-term structural problems.
Professional pruning focuses on making selective cuts that support tree health, structure, and safety instead of arbitrarily reducing the tree’s size.
Storms, high winds, and sudden tree failures can unexpectedly leave you in a very stressful situation. Here are answers to common questions about emergency tree service and what to do when your property needs immediate attention.
If a tree falls on your property, your first priority should always be safety.
Stay away from damaged trees, hanging branches, and any area near downed utility lines. If a tree is contacting an electrical line or presenting some other immediate hazard, call 911.
Once everyone is safe, contact AKA Tree Service to evaluate the situation and remove the tree safely. We have the equipment and experience needed to respond quickly and help restore safety to your property.
Yes. AKA Tree Service provides emergency tree service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you are dealing with storm damage, a fallen tree, or a hazardous situation, our team can respond quickly and recommend the best solution.
Sometimes. Storm damage does not always mean a tree needs to be removed. Depending on the extent of the damage, the tree’s structure, and its overall health, solutions like pruning, structural support, or ongoing monitoring may be possible.
Our team can evaluate the damage and help determine whether your tree can recover or if removal is the safest option.
Insurance coverage depends on your specific policy, the circumstances of the damage, and what was affected. Many policies provide coverage when a tree damages a covered structure, but every situation is different.
Generally speaking, no. Storm-damaged branches can move in unpredictable ways, and they’re often located out of reach. It’s simply safer to rely on professionals who have the training, tools, and experience needed to handle storm-damaged branches properly.
Proactive care is one of the best ways to support your trees and help them thrive. But unfortunately, many property owners don’t understand the best way to provide this kind of proactive care. To help, we’ll share answers to some of the most common plant health care questions our clients have.
Plant health care is a proactive approach dedicated to supporting and preserving the health of your trees. It may include inspections, pest and disease management, soil care, fertilization, and other treatments designed around your tree’s specific needs.
Rather than waiting until a tree is severely declining, plant health care focuses on identifying concerns early and supporting long-term tree health.
Common signs of tree health problems include thinning leaves, dead branches, unusual leaf color, early leaf drop, fungal growth, insect activity, and changes in growth patterns. However, some issues can be difficult to identify without a closer inspection.
Sometimes. A tree’s ability to recover depends on the cause of the problem, the severity of the damage, the tree species, and its overall condition. Some issues can be managed with proper care, while others may cause continued decline.
An experienced tree care professional can evaluate your tree and recommend the best approach.
The best approach is a combination of prevention, monitoring, and early treatment. Regular inspections can help identify issues before they become more serious. Because different tree species face different threats, plant health care programs are designed around the specific needs of your trees and property.
Sometimes. Fertilization can benefit trees when specific nutrient deficiencies or soil conditions are limiting growth, but it is not the solution for every tree problem. It can even worsen some issues.
Proper tree care starts with understanding what is causing the issue and choosing treatments based on the tree’s actual needs.
Yellowing leaves, early leaf drop, or thinning can happen for many reasons, including drought stress, poor soil conditions, root problems, pests, diseases, or normal seasonal changes.
Identifying the cause is the first step toward determining whether your tree needs treatment or if the condition is part of its natural cycle.
Choosing the right tree care company is critical for getting the kind of results you deserve. So, it’s obviously important to learn everything you can about any tree care company you’re considering hiring.

For years, I relied on the same local tree service when I needed a tree removed, that is, until recently, when their estimate seemed unusually exorbitant. A friend recommended AKA Tree Service and I could not have been more fortunate. From the moment I first met Chandler for an on-site estimate, they provided nothing but fantastic service. Chandler is friendly, polite, thorough and knowledgeable. Without asking, he provided me with all of their insurance and licensing information, explained their approach for the job, worked with me on minute details and schedules and kept me apprised as we worked toward completion of the job. Their ops manager Joy then provided a follow up visit to ensure the proper equipment was planned to be on site as needed. Finally, Vladimir, Pablo and René came out for the actual removal and removed 3 huge white pine trees (and I mean HUGE!) piece by piece, limb by limb. By the time they had finished, you could not even tell they were here! The job site was immaculate, they hauled off every single twig and left my property in amazing shape, disturbing hardly anything along the way. On top of all this, they were about the nicest crew I have ever had the pleasure of working with. With all this said, I could not recommend AKA Tree Service any higher. Simply the best and I wish them well as they grow their business into my neck of the woods.Posted on Google![]()

AKA tree Service is a great company with which to work. They have a very knowledgeable certified arborist on staff (shout out to Chandler!) who gave us much peace of mind of the work needed and stayed in touch with us throughout the job. The crews came on time, worked hard, were polite and professional, did exactly what we had contracted to have done, did not tear up our yard, and cleaned the whole area before leaving. We are very pleased with the exceptional job done by AKA Tree Service.Posted on Google![]()

AKA TREE SERVICE-The crew of 3 experienced men did a wonderful job in helping us with major pruning and the removal of several substantial bushes which had grown beyond my reach. Their equipment was first rate as evidenced by some of the work requiring the use of a lift to reach growth that was close to 20 feet high. They cleared up all of the debris, ran their chipper and as I requested dumped the full load of chips exactly where I needed. They were safety conscious and worked with clear focus on the specific areas. I highly recommend their services.Posted on Google![]()
